The US embassy in the Iraqi capital also came under fire, with footage on Saturday morning showing smoke rising from apparent debris on the roof of one of the buildings in the diplomatic compound.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A wave of strikes were carried out on targets pertaining to Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Baghdad and Nineveh early Saturday morning, with security sources having reported at least two deaths from the the militia amalgam that includes pro-Iran factions.

A missile fired from an aircraft struck a house belonging to a member of an Iraqi “resistance faction” in the Iraqi capital's Karada, killing "a key figure" and wounding two, AFP reported, citing a security source. Iraqi security forces later imposed a security cordon around the site of the strike.

The New Region's Baghdad correspondent learned that the strike in the Karada neighborhood targeted a base of Kataib Imam Ali, the PMF’s 40th brigade.

Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media cited Iraqi lawmaker Alaa al-Haidari as saying that Abu Hussein al-Hamidawi, the secretary-general of the pro-Iran Kataib Hezbollah, was wounded in an attack.

A member of Kataib Hezbollah was also killed in a separate strike on a vehicle, AFP later reported, citing a PMF official.

The US embassy in the Iraqi capital also came under fire, with footage on Saturday morning showing smoke rising from apparent debris on the roof of one of the buildings in the diplomatic compound.

Additional explosions were later heard in eastern Baghdad, including near Sadr City and the Baladiyat area on the Rusafa side of the capital.

On the same night, footage obtained by The New Region showed a base belonging to the PMF on the border of northern Iraq’s Nineveh province was targeted, with heavy smoke rising from the site following the attack.

The New Region has learned that the targeted area belongs to the PMF’s 30th Brigade in Nineveh province, a strategically important location that served as a frontline during the war against the Islamic State (ISIS) and sits between Mosul, the Kurdistan Region, and routes leading to the Syrian border, making it sensitive for controlling movement and security.

The strike occurred at 1:15 am Saturday and targeted a military installation, a security source in Nineveh province told The New Region, adding that rescue teams reached the site.

Casualty figures arising from the incident have not yet been announced.

Amid the developments, the PMF’s general staff issued a notice urging members to exercise extreme caution and avoid sharing names, locations, or images related to fighters or their positions.

Iraq’s Joint Operations Command later condemned what it described as strikes carried out inside densely populated residential neighborhoods.

In a statement released by the Security Media Cell, the command said targeting individuals within residential areas constitutes a violation of humanitarian values and international law, warning that attacks on civilian areas are internationally classified as crimes.

The US and Israel have repeatedly targeted PMF components amid their ongoing military offensive against Iran, with the Kurdistan Regional Government having urged Baghdad to rein in the activities of pro-Iran factions within the state-endorsed PMF apparatus amid a series of attacks by militia groups in the Kurdistan Region.
