ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – An airstrike on early Tuesday killed at least 15 members of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), including Anbar Operations' Commander Saad Dawai.
“In a blatant and cowardly attack, the commander of Anbar Operations in the Popular Mobilization Forces, Saad Dawai al-Baiji, was martyred along with a group of his heroic comrades, as a result of a treacherous American airstrike that targeted the command headquarters,” the PMF said in a statement.
In a separate statement issued hours later, the PMF revealed the names of 14 fighters that were killed in the strike alongside the Anbar commander, putting the death toll at at least 15 people.
The strike reportedly targeted a PMF position in Habbaniyah, and has also wounded a number of the force's fighters.
The PMF denounced the attack as a “heinous crime represents a flagrant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and a dangerous disregard for the lives of its sons.”
The group said that it holds “the political forces fully responsible for confronting these repeated American violations and for taking clear and decisive stances that preserve the country's sovereignty and put an end to these dangerous transgressions.”
Many Iran-backed factions operating within the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have been officially incorporated into the Iraqi state security apparatus as part of the PMF.
Earlier on Tuesday, the PMF's 47th brigade were targeted in Babil's Jurf al-Nasr, and two members of the brigade were wounded. The PMF's 47th brigade belong to the salient pro-Iran Kataib Hezbollah group.
Since the start of the war in late February, American-Israeli strikes have targeted PMF positions across the country, while pro-Iran groups operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have repeatedly attacked US interests in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
The strikes have killed dozens of PMF members in recent weeks, including senior figures such as Kataib Hezbollah security chief Abu Ali al-Askari.
Badr Organization Secretary-General Hadi al-Amiri on Thursday said that more than 60 PMF members have been killed and over 100 wounded in attacks by the United States and Israel in recent weeks.
