ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iraq's pro-Iran Harakat al-Nujaba militia group late Wednesday called on the Iraqi parliament and national forces to cancel the security cooperation with the United States following a series of strikes on Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) positions.
“The historical opportunity is now more urgent than ever for parliament and national forces to take a courageous stance by canceling the ‘security agreement’ with the American side,” the group said in a statement.
The Iran-backed group claimed that the American bases have become “defensive systems whose function is to defend” Israel, not to “safeguard Iraq's sovereignty and the security of its people.”
The call follows a series of American airstrikes targeting Iran-backed Iraqi militias under the umbrella of the PMF, leaving at least 70 dead and dozens wounded, according to data compiled by The New Region.
“The blood of our sons in the [PMF] and the Iraqi army, spilled by the treacherous American-Zionist machine, proves beyond any doubt that they are combat occupation forces,” the pro-Iran movement asserted, dubbing the attacks “a malicious geographical engineering aimed at undermining the very foundation of Iraqi security.”
Most recently, an airstrike followed by artillery fire from an aircraft in Anbar's Habbaniyah on Wednesday killed at least seven Iraqi fighters, and injured 13 others, coming one day after another attack on Habbaniya, in which 15 PMF members were killed, including the commander of Anbar operations.
The US State Department, in remarks to The New Region on Wednesday, blamed Iraq for not disclosing the locations of security forces “to promote the safety of forces on the ground that are not involved in attacks against the United States.”
Since the start of the war in late February, pro-Iran groups operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have repeatedly attacked US interests in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Many Iran-backed factions operating within the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have been officially incorporated into the Iraqi state security apparatus as part of the PMF, making Iraq a target for US-Israeli strikes.
