"The Secretary offered his condolences to the families of the Peshmerga killed in an Iranian missile attack on March 24 and wished a speedy recovery to those injured," read a US State Department statement.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a phone call with Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday, offered his condolences for the Peshmerga killed and injured in an Iranian strike earlier this week.

"The Secretary strongly condemned the continued attacks by Iran and Iran-aligned Iraqi terrorist militias against US citizens and energy infrastructure across Iraq," the US State Department said in a statement.

For his part, Prime Minister Barzani "expressed appreciation for Secretary Rubio’s call and the continued US support during this critical time," according to the Kurdistan Regional Government.

"The Secretary also expressed his gratitude to the Kurdistan Regional Government for enabling oil from Iraq, including from the Iraq Kurdistan Region, to reach global markets," the US statement added, referencing an Erbil-Baghdad deal in which the former allowed the federal government to use its pipelines to export oil via Turkey's Ceyhan port amid Iranian restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz.

"They also exchanged views on the relationship between the Kurdistan Region and the Federal Government and on economic challenges," read the KRG publication.

An Iranian ballistic missile attack on the Peshmerga's bases in the Soran administration early Tuesday killed six Peshmerga and injured 30 others, the Peshmerga ministry announced, with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday asserting that Tehran has contacted Erbil and informed the government that the strike was "a mistake" and will be duly investigated.

Rubio “offered his condolences to the families of the Peshmerga killed in an Iranian missile attack on March 24 and wished a speedy recovery to those injured,” the statement said.

Since the US-Israeli war with Iran started in late February with strikes across the country, Iran has carried out retaliatory strikes across the region, particularly on US interests.

The Kurdistan Region has also come under near-daily attacks by pro-Iran militias, with Kurdish authorities repeatedly urging Baghdad to rein them in.
