ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, during which he condemned the attacks on the Kurdistan Region and reiterated Iraq’s official stance against the ongoing war, calling for an immediate return to dialogue.
An attack with six Iranian ballistic missile targeting Kurdish Peshmerga bases in Erbil’s Soran administration early Tuesday killed six Peshmerga and injured 30 others, amid continued attacks on the Kurdistan Region by pro-Iran Iraqi groups.
During the Wednesday call, the readout of which was shared by the Iraqi Presidency on Friday, Rashid “condemned the attacks targeting the Kurdistan region, emphasizing that such actions do not contribute to regional stability but rather exacerbate tensions and escalation.”
“He also clarified that the Kurdistan Regional Government [KRG] of Iraq is cohesive and is working resolutely to protect the borders and prevent any attempts to exploit Iraqi territory to escalate tensions or threaten the security and stability of neighboring countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement added.
The Kurdistan Region has been struck with hundreds of drones and missiles since the start of the war in late February, resulting in tens of casualties and significant material damage, despite Kurdish authorities repeatedly stressing that the Region is not party to this conflict.
Most of the attacks on the Kurdistan Region have been claimed by factions within the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of pro-Iran Iraqi militias, many of which have been institutionalized and formally incorporated into the Iraqi state security apparatus as part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).
Iraq is the only country that has been subjected to attacks from both sides of the war, with Iran and its proxies targeting US interests in the country, and US-Israeli strikes on pro-Iran militia groups.
The Iraqi president also expressed the country’s “categorical rejection of any military aggression targeting its territory, considering it a violation of sovereignty and a source of great concern.”
Amid the conflict, American-Israeli strikes have targeted PMF positions across the country, killing over 80 PMF fighters and wounding hundreds others.
“Pezeshkian condemned American and Zionist [Israeli] attacks on Iraqi military and security forces’ positions, and emphasized Iran's readiness for greater engagement and cooperation with Iraq,” according to a statement from Iranian media.
As the war approaches its second month, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday confirmed that indirect talks between Tehran and Washington, mediated by Islamabad, are taking place. Iran has repeatedly rejected the reports, claiming there have been no talks.
CBS News, citing “multiple sources familiar with the matter,” reported that Washington is expecting an Iranian response to Trump’s 15-point framework for a peace deal on Friday.
