ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday condemned the “cowardly” attack that targeted the residence of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok, and urged the Iraqi government to bring the “outlaw criminals” to justice.
Drones targeted Barzani’s residence in Duhok on Saturday afternoon without resulting in any casualties, per a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency. No party has claimed the attack as of the writing of this article.
“I condemn and denounce in the strongest terms the cowardly drone attack on the residence of [Kurdistan Region President] Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok. Once again, we call on the federal government to act on its responsibility, bring these outlaw criminals to justice, and curb the continued terrorist attacks carried out by these groups,” the premier wrote in an X post.
The Kurdistan Region prime minister called on the international community to “support the Kurdistan Region in protecting its citizens and safeguarding the interests of the Kurdistan Region,” warning that “We reserve every right to confront these terrorists, and we will take whatever steps are necessary to protect the Kurdistan Region.”
The attack on Barzani's house garnered widespread condemnation across Iraq and beyond, including from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), French President Emmanuel Macron, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, among several other Iraqi and regional top figures.
Iraqi Iran-backed militias have repeatedly targeted the Kurdistan Region, prompting Kurdish leaders to repeatedly call on Baghdad to put a limit to the strikes.
Attacks on the Kurdistan Region by Iran and its proxies have intensified since the onset of the US-Israeli war on Iran.
An Iranian missile attack on a Peshmerga base on Tuesday killed at least six Peshmerga in Erbil's Soran administration. The Kurdistan Region president noted a day later that Iran had told them that the attack was a “mistake”, and offered their apologies and condolences.
The Kurdistan Region's leaders have repeatedly stressed that the Region is not party to the ongoing conflict and does not plan to be.
