ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The Kurdistan Region has been targeted in nearly 500 missile and drone attacks since the start of the war in the Middle East, leaving at least 14 dead and dozens injured, with Erbil calling on Baghdad to compensate residents whose homes and property were damaged.
Since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran, the Kurdistan Region has faced 480 attacks as of Sunday, resulting in at least 14 deaths and 93 injuries, according to data gathered by The New Region.
The attacks were mainly carried out using drones, accounting for 359 incidents, while missiles made up 104 of the strikes.
The majority of the attacks targeted Erbil province, which recorded 370 strikes. Sulaimani followed with 90, Duhok with 11, and Halabja recorded the fewest at three.
Saturday saw the highest number of strikes on Erbil, with the province hit by more than 25 attacks, most of which were intercepted.
Erbil International Airport and US Consulate have been subject to numerous drone and missile attacks since the initiation of conflict, often with Iran-backed Iraqi militias claiming responsibility for the attacks, under the pretext of targeting the American presence at the sites.
One of the most high-profile incidents occurred when a Peshmerga base in Erbil's Soran was targeted in an Iranian strike on Tuesday, killing six of the Kurdish fighters and ushering in an outpouring of international sympathy and condemnation for the attack.
However, strikes have not been limited to US-linked facilities but have also targeted hotels, religious sites, and residential areas. So far, 46 homes and 32 civilian vehicles have been reported damaged.
A committee has been formed in Erbil to assess the extent of the damage and determine compensation needs.
Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw called on the Iraqi government to compensate affected residents through emergency government funding, according to information obtained by The New Region.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a network of pro-Iran Iraqi militias linked to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks on Erbil.
Kurdish authorities have continuously condemned the attacks launched by the Iraqi militias on the Region, while calling on Baghdad to control the “outlaw groups” and prevent the recurrence of strikes.
