ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – At least two Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) fighters were killed and four others injured in a new round of “Zionist-American strikes” on their base in Iraq’s western Anbar province, the group announced.
“At 2:30 pm on Tuesday, the 17th Brigade of the Popular Mobilization forces in the Rutba district of Anbar province was subjected to a treacherous Zionist-American attack,” the PMF said in a statement.
“The heinous attack resulted in the martyrdom of two fighters and the wounding of four others,” it added.
The PMF’s 17th Brigade is known as Saraya al-Jihad, a Shiite paramilitary unit involved in operations in Anbar province, particularly near the Saudi Arabia and Syria borders.
The attack followed overnight strikes against PMF brigades in Babil and Nineveh provinces, which caused no casualties, according to the group.
On Monday, Iraq’s ruling Shiite Coordination Framework said that more than 100 members of Iraqi security and military forces have been killed since the start of the war.
Pro-Iran armed groups operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have targeted US interests in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, prompting the retaliatory strikes.
Since the start of the war, US-Israeli strikes have repeatedly targeted positions of the state-incorporated, which comprises dozens of armed factions that are affiliated with Iran.
Reports have also emerged of Iraqi militiamen entering Iran, with footage circulating online showing what appear to be PMF convoys, made up of dozens of pick-up trucks, which Tehran-affiliated media has described as the “humanitarian aid convoys” from Iraq.
