ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The US special envoy for Syria conveyed a message from President Donald Trump to Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday that strongly condemned an attack on his residence, reaffirming Washington’s full support for the security of Kurdistan and Iraq.
Barzani’s residence in Duhok was struck by drones on Saturday without resulting in any casualties. No party has claimed the attack as of the writing of this article.
On Sunday, Washington condemned the “despicable terrorist attacks,” blaming Iran and pro-Iran Iraqi militias for the attacks, charges that Tehran denies.
Tom Barrack, the US special envoy, “conveyed a message from President Donald Trump in which he strongly condemned the attacks on the Kurdistan Region and the drone strike on the residence of President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency on Wednesday.
On Sunday, President Masoud Barzani revealed that over 450 drones and missiles have targeted the Kurdistan Region, including bases of Kurdish Peshmerga forces, since the US-Israeli war with Iran began, with an attack on a Peshmerga base earlier in March killing six.
Trump expressed his sympathy to Barzani and his condolences to the families of Kurds who have been killed in strikes by Iran and its proxies, and wished a speedy recovery for the wounded.
Trump also vowed “America's full support for preserving the security and stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region,” the statement added.
Barzani thanked him for the call and reiterated his appreciation for America’s support and cooperation with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Following the attack on Barzani’s residence, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) condemned it as “an act of terrorism” and blamed the US and Israel for the strike.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also condemned the “terrorist” attack on Barzani’s residence in a message to the Kurdish leader, implying that the act was a “false flag operation” by the US and Israel.
The attack on Barzani's house garnered widespread condemnation across Iraq and beyond, including from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Iran's IRGC, French President Emmanuel Macron, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, among several other Iraqi and regional top figures.
Attacks on the Kurdistan Region by Iran and its proxies have intensified since the onset of the US-Israeli war on Iran. The Kurdistan Region's leaders have repeatedly stressed that the Region is not a party to the ongoing conflict and does not plan to be.
