“ It is incumbent upon the federal government to use all means to thwart these terrorist attacks and bring those responsible to justice,” the premier said.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday strongly condemned attacks by “terrorist militias” targeting the US consulate and civilian areas in Erbil, renewing his call on Baghdad to take “decisive” action against groups involved in the attacks.

“I strongly condemn the heinous attacks by terrorist militias targeting the US Consulate General and civilian areas in Erbil. These deliberate acts of aggression pose a grave threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region,” Barzani said in a statement.

“This is unacceptable,” he stressed.

The Kurdistan Region has been targeted by hundreds of missile and drone attacks since the US-Israel war with Iran started in late February.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a network of pro-Iran Iraqi militias linked to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks on Erbil.

Kurdish authorities have continuously condemned the attacks launched by the Iraqi militias on the Region, while calling on Baghdad to control the “outlaw groups” and prevent the recurrence of strikes.

“I once again call unequivocally upon the federal government in Baghdad to take immediate, decisive, and tangible actions against these outlaw armed groups and militias. It is incumbent upon the federal government to use all means to thwart these terrorist attacks and bring those responsible to justice,” the premier added.

The attacks on the Kurdistan Region have resulted in at least 14 deaths and 93 injuries, according to data obtained by Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT) last Sunday.

A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Baghdad on Sunday said that Iran-backed Iraqi militias had carried out two attacks on US diplomatic facilities on Saturday, “attempting to assassinate American diplomats.”

“This is in addition to hundreds of attacks in and on Iraqi territory targeting American citizens, neighboring countries of Iraq, and Iraqi state institutions, including in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, over recent weeks,” the spokesperson added, stressing that Washington has repeatedly called on Baghdad to curtail the attacks.

According to CPT data, the attacks on the Kurdistan Region were mainly carried out using drones, accounting for 359 incidents, while missiles made up 104 of the strikes.

The majority of the attacks targeted Erbil province, which recorded 370 strikes. Sulaimani followed with 90, Duhok with 11, and Halabja recorded the fewest at three.
