ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – US President Donald Trump on Sunday said the US military will begin blockading all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, after the Iranian side reportedly refused to give up nuclear proliferation following Islamabad talks.
“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
“The Blockade will begin shortly. Other Countries will be involved with this Blockade,” he said.
The announcement came following Pakistani-mediated bilateral talks in Islamabad, where, following 21 hours of negotiations, both sides reported an inability to reach a comprehensive agreement.
The highlighted terms included the Strait of Hormuz, nuclear program, war reparations, lifting of sanctions, and a “complete end” to the war, according to Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.
"The meeting with Iran began early in the morning, and lasted throughout the night — Close to 20 hours," Trump said in another post soon after. "I could go into great detail, and talk about much that has been gotten but, there is only one thing that matters — IRAN IS UNWILLING TO GIVE UP ITS NUCLEAR AMBITIONS!"
A key US demand for ending the war, and one of the main justifications for launching the military operation in February, was for Tehran to halt its nuclear program, a demand routinely rejected by Iranian leadership, who insist on the country’s right to “peaceful” uranium enrichment.
Another key term was the complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz, a demand Trump claims Tehran “knowingly failed” to meet.
The American president accused Iranian authorities of threatening passing ships at the vital waterway with hidden sea mines.
“THIS IS WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted,” he said, noting, “Iran will not be allowed to profit off this Illegal Act of EXTORTION.”
The US Navy was instructed to interdict vessels in international waters that had “paid a toll to Iran,” according to the president.
“No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.”
The US military will begin to destroy the purported sea mines laid in the strait, according to Trump, who added that “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!”
The Strait of Hormuz is a key waterway responsible for roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil, which Iran has closed as a means in its war against the US and Israel, sharply driving up global oil prices.
A two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran reached on April 7 has led to a lull in attacks in the region, with the Iran-aligned Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Shiite militias, on Wednesday saying that it too will refrain from offensive action during the period.
