ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – US President Donald Trump on Monday warned that if Iranian ships “come anywhere close” to his planned blockade of Iranian ports, they will be “immediately ELIMINATED.”
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Sunday announced that the US would be imposing a blockade of “all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports” on Monday 5:00PM (Erbil time), in accordance with Trump’s earlier announcement.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that US attacks have wiped out the majority of Iran’s navy, noting that the only ships they have not targeted are what are known as “fast attack ships,” because the US “did not consider them much of a threat.”
“Warning: If any of these ships come anywhere close to our BLOCKADE, they will be immediately ELIMINATED,” Trump wrote.
The American president added that the attack would use “the same system of kill that we use against the drug dealers on boats at Sea,” describing it as “quick and brutal.”
Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday said that military vessels intending to approach the Strait of Hormuz “under any title or pretext will be considered a violation of the ceasefire and will be dealt with severely.”
CENTCOM said the blockade would be enforced “impartially” and include vessels of all nationalities, covering ports along the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. The US military “will not impede freedom of navigation” through the Strait of Hormuz for ships traveling to or from non-Iranian ports, the statement added.
The decision was first announced by Trump on Sunday, accusing Iran of refusing to abandon its nuclear program after Pakistani-mediated talks in Islamabad failed to reach an agreement. He added that other countries will join the effort.
The announcement followed over 21 hours of negotiations between Iran and the US in Islamabad, which ended without a deal, with disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, war reparations, and control of the waterway.
Iranian defense ministry on Monday said that Trump would “fail in any attempt to interfere militarily in the Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman, adding that Tehran has “no hesitation in delivering a decisive and regrettable response to any aggressor” in the Strait “and elsewhere.”
Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf responded to Trump’s threats on Sunday saying: “We will not bow to any threats; let them test our will once again to teach them a bigger lesson.”
Trump accused Iran of threatening shipping and imposing “illegal tolls,” saying vessels that comply with Tehran’s demands would be targeted, while warning that any attack by Iranian forces would trigger a strong military response.
The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20 percent of global oil supplies. The move comes amid a temporary ceasefire reached earlier in April that has reduced attacks across the region.
