The attack, carried out by a 19-year-old former student, occurred in the Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Siverek district.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – A school shooting in Turkey’s southeastern Kurdish-majority Sanliurfa (Riha) province left at least 16 people wounded on Tuesday, before the assailant took his own life as police forces attempted to arrest him.

The attack, carried out by a 19-year-old former student, occurred in the Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Siverek district.

The victims included 10 students, four teachers, one police officer, and a canteen worker, according to Sanliurfa Governor Hasan Sildak, who added that “thankfully, there were no fatalities.”

The governor noted that the general situation of the wounded is “good”, five of whom were transferred to the city of Sanliurfa: two teachers and three students.

Sildak added that the attacker, born in 2007, is a former student of the same school that he targeted, though he only attended 9th grade there, and has no prior criminal record. “He ended his life while being apprehended by the police.”

“The attacker randomly opened fire in the corridor with a shotgun,” the Sanliurfa governor said.

The Turkish interior ministry said “an extensive investigation has been launched by our security forces regarding the incident, and developments will be shared with the public,” wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
