ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon announced Friday that an Indonesian peacekeeper died after succumbing to wounds sustained in a projectile explosion in late March, coming soon after the deaths of two French soldiers in an alleged gunfight with Hezbollah militants.
On March 29, personnel serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under attack in southern Lebanon's Adchit Al Qusayr, with one servicemember being killed immediately while another was seriously wounded.
"We do not know the origin of the projectile. We have launched an investigation to determine all of the circumstances," the mission said in a statement the day after.
"UNIFIL deplores the passing today of Corporal Rico Pramudia, who was critically injured following a projectile explosion in his base in Adchit Al Qusayr on the night of 29 March," a UNIFIL statement from Friday read.
"Corporal Pramudia, 31, tragically succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Beirut."
US President Donald Trump announced Thursday a three-week extension of the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which was originally set to expire Sunday.
"I think there's a very good chance of having peace. I think it should be an easy one," he told reporters on Thursday.
Hezbollah official Ali Fayad said on Friday that “extending the ceasefire makes no sense" in light of continued "hostile acts" by Israel, asserting they gave "the resistance the right to respond at the appropriate time."
Despite the continued halt in hostilities, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported two people were killed Friday morning in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon.
The Indonesian corporal is the sixth UNIFIL fatality in recent weeks, a toll that includes two French soldiers killed in a separate incident.
French President Emmanuel Macron pointed the finger at Hezbollah for the attacks, following a UNIFIL announcement that "non-state actors" were responsible for the ambush.
Hezbollah denied the claim later that day, calling for “caution in assigning blame” until a probe by the Lebanese Army is completed.
“Hezbollah expresses its surprise at the hasty accusations leveled against it, especially given the silence of these same parties when the Israeli enemy attacks UNIFIL forces,” the group said in a statement.
The organization also called on all parties to “uphold their obligations under international law and ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times,” reminding them that “deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law and of Security Council resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.”
Initially established in 1978, UNIFIL was redeployed to Lebanon following the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. The mission has suffered casualties from both sides, enduring nearly 350 fatalities since its inception.
In December 2022, Sean Rooney of the Irish Defence Forces was killed when a UNIFIL convoy traveling to Beirut International Airport was attacked by Hezbollah militants.
