ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday announced that he will travel to Islamabad, and later Muscat and Moscow, to discuss regional developments, amid stalled negotiations with the US.
“Embarking on timely tour of Islamabad, Muscat, and Moscow. Purpose of my visits is to closely coordinate with our partners on bilateral matters and consult on regional developments,” Araghchi said on X.
“Our neighbors are our priority,” he added.
Pakistan has acted as a mediator between Washington and Tehran amid the recent conflict, hosting the two warring sides for negotiations on April 11, which did not bear fruit.
US Vice President JD Vance was set to travel to Islamabad on Tuesday for a second round of talks, before the trip was canceled after the Iranian side announced it would not be sending a delegation to the Pakistani capital.
While Tehran has made no public mention of possible new talks during Araghchi’s visit to Islamabad, CNN on Friday, citing two administration officials, reported that US President Donald Trump is sending special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan to “participate in talks” with the Iranian top diplomat this weekend.
Vice President Vance will not be part of the American delegation, considering that Iran’s parliament speaker and top negotiator Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf is not traveling to Islamabad either.
Muscat has acted as a mediator between Iran and the US prior to the recent conflict and the 12-Day War in June 2025. Moscow on the other hand remains a key Tehran ally.
On Tuesday, Trump said that he has accepted a Pakistani request to indefinitely extend the two-week ceasefire with Iran hours before its expiry, shortly after Iran announced it was not attending further talks in Islamabad.
Iranian authorities have routinely cited the American side’s “excessive demands” and lack of political will for the failure of the talks, while Washington has blamed it on Tehran’s refusal to give up its nuclear ambition.
The two sides have also repeatedly traded blame for violating the ceasefire.
Iran has also refused to participate in talks while a US naval blockade on its ports continues.
