The collision involved around 40 vehicles, Kirkuk’s police department told The New Region, after a truck driver lost control of his vehicle at high speed in the city.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – At least six people were killed and almost 20 others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Kirkuk involving some 40 cars, authorities told The New Region on Sunday.

 

The collision involved around 40 vehicles, Kirkuk’s police department told The New Region, after a truck driver lost control of his vehicle at high speed in the city.

 

The truck reportedly carried cement. Eyewitnesses told The New Region that the driver honked to alert his surroundings. CCTV footage seen by The New Region showed the truck coming through heavy traffic at high speeds and colliding with several vehicles.

 

 

Some of the affected vehicles combusted, while others were flipped over. The crash killed at least six people, and 17 others have been wounded, according to early tolls given to The New Region by Kirkuk health authorities.

 

Eyewitnesses have told The New Region’s correspondent that at least two other people are still stuck at the site of the accident as rescue teams and locals attempt to break them out, with the main Kirkuk-Sulaimani road having been closed as a result of the crash.

 

Kurdistan Region Health Minister Saman Barzanji said that the Region’s hospitals stand ready to cure the wounded from the crash, affirming their readiness to dispatch teams and supply blood and medical supplies.
