ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – At least one person has been killed and several others are believed to be stuck under the rubble of an under-construction building that collapsed in Kirkuk city on Monday, The New Region’s correspondent reported.
The incident in Kirkuk’s Wahda neighborhood occurred after the second floor of the building collapsed, killing one worker, injuring several others, and leaving a number of other people trapped.
Civil defense teams and security forces have arrived at the scene and are attempting to carry out rescue missions, according to The New Region’s correspondent.
At least seven workers have been rescued so far, with the death toll expected to rise.

It was the second incident in Kirkuk in a day, after a tragic multi-vehicle crash on Monday left at least six dead and around 20 others injured. The incident prompted condolences from top officials around the country.
Buildings in Iraq are often built with lax safety standards due to lacking safety rules. Many structures are often opened without construction permits and safety approvals.
