ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Kuwait on Tuesday summoned the Iranian ambassador to protest an infiltration attempt by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) earlier this month, the foreign ministry said.
The Kuwaiti foreign ministry on Tuesday condemned an infiltration attempt into the Bubiyan island by elements allegedly linked to Iran’s IRGC, who engaged in a clash with Kuwaiti forces before being apprehended.
Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Suleiman al-Mashaan summoned Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Tutunji to “deliver a protest note” and “express Kuwait’s strong condemnation of this hostile act, demanding that the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately and unconditionally cease such actions.”
Kuwait further “held Iran fully responsible for this blatant violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty and a grave breach of international law, the United Nations Charter, and Security Council Resolution 2817.”
A Kuwaiti serviceman was wounded during an exchange of fire with the IRGC in the alleged infiltration attempt. Two IRGC members managed to escape while four men were arrested.
The Gulf state has been subjected to numerous rounds of Iranian missile and drone strikes since the onset of the US-Israeli war on Iran in late February, under the pretext of hosting US troops and military bases.
It has summoned the Iranian ambassador four times since the war began.
