In July last year, the bodies of a father and his daughter were found murdered at home in Duhok province’s Sheikhan district, while the suspect, who is the father’s son, had quietly returned to Germany.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A forensic physician and police officer from the Kurdistan Region have been present in Germany for over two weeks to testify in a murder case that took place last year in Duhok province and saw the suspect flee to Germany, an official said Thursday.

In July last year, the bodies of a father and his daughter were found murdered at home in Duhok province’s Sheikhan district, while the suspect, who is the father’s son, had quietly returned to Germany.

The German government had officially invited chief of the area’s police Bashar Sharafani and the forensic physician on the case to attend the court sessions as witnesses.

“Because the incident occurred within their station's jurisdiction, they had been coordinating with German police from the very beginning via email and were later formally invited by the German government to attend the court sessions,” Sharafani told The New Region.

The delegation has been in Germany for 15 days and is set to return to the Kurdistan Region on Thursday, while the suspect’s sister will continue to attend court as the complainant.

The largest Kurdish diaspora community is in Germany. Although there is no set data, they are expected to be in the millions.
