ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A Lebanese Army patrol was struck by an Israeli airstrike on Saturday on the Khardali-Nabatieh road in southern Lebanon, killing two officers and a soldier, according to Lebanese authorities, with the Israeli military saying it is "reviewing the incident, and lessons will be learned accordingly."
The Lebanese Army said a number of servicemen, including an officer, were killed in what it described as a “barbaric Israeli airstrike” targeting a military vehicle.
The army said the strike “comes amid the continued Israeli attacks against Lebanon and its people,” with the deceased servicemembers being identified as Brigdier General Samer Sabra, Captain Elie Khoury, and soldier Hassan Ghazzal.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack in an X post, saying the strike was a “flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and international laws and norms.”
Aoun added that the attack “comes amid ongoing escalation despite Lebanon’s efforts in Washington negotiations to halt Israeli attacks.”
Similarly, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said that "today’s crime is certainly not a mistake or a suspicion," rejecting what he described as "Israeli attempts to justify the strike."
Hezbollah condemned the Israeli strike that killed two Lebanese Army officers and a soldier, calling it a “deliberate crime” and extending its condolences to the families of the victims and the Lebanese Army.
The Israeli military said it had identified a vehicle moving “suspiciously” toward its soldiers near the area of Tebnit in southern Lebanon earlier on Saturday.
According to the Israeli military, the vehicle was traveling in what it described as an “active combat zone” near Tebnit, where it had received “concrete indications” that Hezbollah would direct fire toward its troops and intelligence pointing to Hezbollah activity in the area.
"Following the identification of the vehicle, and in light of the concrete indication of Hezbollah fire in the area alongside the threat posed to the soldiers, the vehicle was struck," the statement continued.
Israel said the incident is under review and stressed that it operates against Hezbollah, “not against the Lebanese Army.”
