ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters on Saturday announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, in light of the US’ “failure to implement” Article One of a recently signed agreement, that stipulates an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Lebanon’s health ministry said on Friday that at least 47 people were killed in renewed Israeli airstikes in the country’s south, despite the US and Iranian presidents having signed the memorandum of understanding a day earlier.
On Saturday, Lebanese state media reported that multiple overnight Israeli airstrikes had killed at least five people, despite the renewed ceasefire. The Lebanese army said later that at least one soldier was killed in Israeli strikes on the Kfar Rumman-Nabatieh road.
“In view of America's blatant breach of promise and breach of contract regarding the failure to implement the first paragraph of the MoU to end the war, and in response to the ceaseless and continuous violation of the ceasefire by the Zionist regime in southern Lebanon … the Strait of Hormuz will be closed to vessel traffic,” Khatam al-Anbiya said in a statement on Saturday.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) Navy also warned ships not to approach the Strait of Hormuz, “otherwise, their safety will be at risk.”
Israel and Hezbollah agreed to renew a ceasefire starting Friday following the heavy exchanges of fire between the two sides, with the truce being reached after Washington and Doha's mediation.
Lebanon remains one of the main pillars of the newly-signed US-Iran peace deal. Article one of the MoU calls for an end to the war by the US, Iran, and all of their allies on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Shortly after the Iranian force’s announcement, foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said that an Iranian delegation will travel to Switzerland, where the deal was originally set to be signed on Friday.
Baghaei said that Tehran has “adhered” to all of its commitments, and the US is also “obliged to force the Zionist regime [Israel] to stop attacking Lebanon.”
The spokesperson noted that Tehran considers Article One of the agreement “its most important section,” adding that if any part of the MoU is not implemented it, the entirety of the accord will be “compromised”.
US President Donald Trump has previously expressed discontent at Israel’s conduct in Lebanon, slamming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for attacking southern Lebanon on the day that Tehran and Washington were poised to announce the finalization of the deal.
