ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – US President Donald Trump on Sunday threatened to take renewed military action against Iran unless it reins in Hezbollah, amid peace negotiations in Switzerland between the two countries.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that Iran must “immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble.”
The US president warned that if Hezbollah continued its activities, Washington would “hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!”
The comments came as US and Iranian representatives met Sunday in Switzerland at the opening of the Lucerne summit, a diplomatic initiative announced by Qatar.
In a statement, Qatar said senior officials from the United States, Iran, and the two mediating countries, Qatar and Pakistan, had begun high-level talks aimed at reaching a “comprehensive and lasting agreement” addressing issues covered by a previously negotiated memorandum of understanding.
Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) to bring an end to the conflict that started in February, and the ensuing impacts it left on the global economy with the closing of the vital Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the digital signing of the memorandum, hostilities continued in Lebanon as Israel and Hezbollah exchanged heavy fire, with the two sides blaming each other for violating a ceasefire agreement.
“Indeed, the Israeli enemy's attacks and massacres are no longer mere breaches of the ceasefire agreement, but rather constitute outright aggression and a continuation of the war in every sense of the word,” Hezbollah said in a statement on Satuday.
Trump also said on Sunday that he warned Iranian officials overnight against closing the Strait of Hormuz, telling them the move would have severe consequences, according to remarks reported by Fox News.
“You close it and you won’t have a country,” Trump said he told the Iranians, according to Fox News’ Trey Yingst. “You won’t even make it back to your fu*king country.”
Though the Strait was set to remain open toll free for at least 60 days, Iran announced that the Strait will be closed again, in light of a “breach” of Article One of the MoU by the US, which calls for an end to the war by the two sides and all of their allies on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Qatar said technical and specialized teams had been formed to negotiate the final terms of the deal and oversee its implementation, expressing hope that dialogue and diplomacy would lead to a lasting settlement.
