The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday voiced support for the recent initiative launched by US President Joe Biden to end the war in Gaza in collaboration with the Egyptian and Qatari governments, backed by several Arab nations.
In a statement issued Saturday, the Ministry underscored the importance of halting aggression and called on the international community to fulfill its obligations, citing violations of international law, international humanitarian law, and human rights.
“We urge our Palestinian brothers to engage positively with the proposed initiatives, safeguarding their rights and legitimate aspirations,” the Ministry stated.
“It is imperative to consider initiatives that lead to the cessation of aggression by occupying authorities, ensuring a complete withdrawal of forces from Gaza, and facilitating the reconstruction of Gaza.”
The Ministry emphasized that such actions should pave the way for the restoration of full rights to the Palestinian people, highlighting the gravity of the injustices inflicted upon them.
Iraq affirmed its commitment to working alongside its allies and partners to deliver humanitarian aid and address the plight of the Palestinian people, while striving to ensure their rights and secure their future.
US President Joe Biden on Friday proposed a three-part plan to end the war in Gaza, urging Hamas to accept it, as he faces mounting pressure and criticism over his support for the Israeli war.
The plan includes a six-week ceasefire, withdrawal of IDF forces from populated areas, and an exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners.
Hamas has responded positively to the proposal. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres have also supported the initiative, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire and humanitarian access.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's previous opposition to ending the war as part of a ceasefire deal adds significance to Biden's call for the war's end.
The plan also includes a permanent ceasefire and a major reconstruction effort with US and international assistance.
