“A small drone was spotted directly over the Green Zone by the forces in control and dealt with without any damage or losses… This is preliminary information, and we will provide you with further details later,” Saad Maan, head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell, told The New Region.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - A surveillance drone was shot down over Baghdad’s Green Zone in the early hours of Wednesday, a top security official said, coming after a massive anti-corruption raid in the area that houses government buildings and residences of numerous officials.

Footage circulating online showed a surveillance drone flying over the Green Zone while security forces could be heard shooting at it.

“A small drone was spotted directly over the Green Zone by the forces in control and dealt with without any damage or losses… This is preliminary information, and we will provide you with further details later,” said Saad Maan, head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell.

Baghdad’s Green Zone is the administrative nerve of the Iraqi government, housing the Prime Minister’s Office, the Iraqi parliament, diplomatic missions, including the US Embassy, as well as the headquarters of many political parties.

Iraqi special security forces entered the Green Zone and locked down the area overnight on Sunday, amid reports of raids on several senior officials’ residences due to their implication in corruption cases.

The Green Zone raids come against the backdrop of a recent corruption case involving over $85 million that was unearthed by Iraqi authorities, in a case involving Iraq’s former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili, who was arrested in May.

As of the time of writing this report, it is unclear whether the surveillance drone is connected to the anti-corruption raids or where it came from.
