US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it completed its largest round of strikes since fighting resumed this week, hitting around 140 military targets after accusing Tehran of attacking another commercial vessel in the strategic waterway.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – The US said early Sunday it struck around 140 Iranian military targets in a third round of attacks this week, retaliating for Tehran's attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, after which Iran launched missile and drone attacks on US military installations across the Gulf.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it completed its largest round of strikes since fighting resumed this week, hitting around 140 military targets after accusing Tehran of attacking another commercial vessel in the strategic waterway.

CENTCOM alleged that Iran had “blatantly attacked” the M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. It said one civilian crew member is missing and the vessel is “unable to continue the journey due to an onboard fire and significant engineroom damage.”

In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it closed the Strait of Hormuz until further notice.

The latest escalation follows US President Donald Trump's declaration on Wednesday that the truce he signed with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in mid-June was “over” after fighting resumed between the two countries. On Friday, however, Trump said the two sides had nevertheless agreed to continue negotiations.

After “hitting and stopping” a vessel it accused of violating regulations in the Strait of Hormuz, the IRGC said it launched ballistic missiles at the US al-Udeid Air Base near Doha, claiming it destroyed “the fighter jet maintenance and repair center and the command center” at the facility.

The Iranian military also targeted US Patriot air defense systems, ammunition depots and radar sites in Kuwait with drones, according to Iranian state broadcaster.

Kuwait's air defense forces were working to intercept an ongoing attack on the country's territory, its military said in a statement.

The IRGC also claimed it targeted and destroyed “communications system and radar site” used by the US military in Bahrain, as well as “logistics support centers and refueling platforms of US aircraft carriers in the port of Daqm, Oman, with a heavy and surprise attack.”

Following Iran's attacks on Sunday, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said in a post on X that “Iran made a poor choice. Now they pay.”
