ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Areas of Erbil and Sulaimani were targeted in drone strikes on Friday night, coming as the Kurdistan Region continues to be bombarded as hostilities between the US and Iran resume in earnest.

Large fireballs were seen emanating from sites in Sulaimani province's Tasluja, with The New Region having learned that a weapons depot was targeted in the attack.

A security source told the New Region that at least two drones were involved in the bombardment.

Sulaimani Governor Haval Abubaker condemned the strikes, reiterating the Kurdistan Region’s neutrality in the ongoing regional conflict and urging civilians to stay away from impact sites.

"We reiterate that the Kurdistan Region and the local government of Sulaimani are impartial and responsible; They are not part of the war that is engulfing the region."

Later in the evening, a series of drones were seen intercepted over Erbil’s sky, with no reported casualties or material damage.

Ahmed Hoshyar, General Director of Erbil International Airport, confirmed to The New Region that there had been no suspensions and that flights were proceeding as scheduled, despite claims by Iranian state TV to the contrary.

Another wave of drones targeted Tasluja around midnight, with unverified footage showing damage to civilian houses.

The incidents marks the second successive night in which areas of the Region have been targeted amid renewed US-Iran hostilities.

At least nine members of the Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan, an Iranian Kurdish dissdent group, were killed in an Iranian missile attack on one of their bases in Sulaimani’s Zirgwezala the night prior.

Eight bomb-laden drones were intercepted over Erbil early Friday, after another eight projectiles were intercepted late Wednesday.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Friday condemned the “unjustified” Iranian attacks, urging Tehran to cease its bombardment and calling on Baghdad and the international community to take a stance.

“The continuation of these attacks constitutes a grave threat to regional peace and security and risks further destabilizing the entire region,” the KRG said in a statement.

“We call on the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately cease these attacks, respect the sovereignty and stability of the Kurdistan Region.”

In May, Tehran declared the Kurdistan Region a site of “hostile bases” under its security doctrine, warning that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had been given the same designation, making both subject to preemptive strikes.

Pro-Iran Iraqi militias similarly targeted the Region's energy infrastructure and military bases extensively during the conflict.
