ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – A large fire broke out atop Sulaimani’s Goizha mountain on Tuesday night, with a local security source asserting that the blaze was not caused by a drone strike, contrary to media reports. 

The source, who requested anonymity, told The New Region that the blaze was not caused by an attack. 

The New Region's correspondent confirmed on Wednesday morning that the fire had been brought under control, after civil defense teams rushed to battle the blaze.

Media affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Tuesday reported that the fire on Goizha mountain was caused by attacks on opposition groups. 

Goizha is a mountain overlooking the Kurdistan Region’s Sulaimani city and a prime destination for city views, picnicking, and sunset watching.

Fires on Goizha and the nearby Azmar Mountain are commonplace and have increased in frequency over the years. 

Last year, authorities in Sulaimani banned entry to the mountain after 11 pm to reduce the likelihood of blazes breaking out. 

In the Kurdistan Region’s hot and dry summer, fires are easily sparked and can spread quickly.

Following renewed tensions between Iran and the United States, the Kurdistan Region is once again being targeted by airstrikes focused on US interests and the bases of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.

Another fighter from Iranian Kurdish opposition Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan (Shorshger) died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an earlier missile attack on the group's bases in Sulaimani, raising the death toll to 10, a senior party member said.

Also on Tuesday, the Iranian Kurdish opposition Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) said its bases in Erbil province were targeted in three missile attacks.

Early Friday, a missile strike targeted the opposition group's base in Sulaimani's Zirgwezala area, marking the deadliest attack on the Kurdistan Region since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran in late February.
