ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq's judiciary said Wednesday that over 1 billion Iraqi dinars were recovered in a financial fraud case, while investigations into an ongoing corruption case resulted in the seizure of 13 billion dinars, 40 gold bars, and 5 kilograms of gold jewelry.

Chief Judge of Baghdad's Second Karkh Investigation Court, Diaa Jaafar, said the court recovered 1.14 billion Iraqi dinars (around $870,000) “related to a financial fraud crime,” according to a statement from Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council.

The judge added that investigations into the case of Adnan al-Jumaili, the detained oil ministry undersecretary for refining affairs, “resulted in the seizure of 13 billion Iraqi dinars (nearly $ 10 million) and $400,000 dollars, which were hidden in several locations in Salahaddin province,” adding “40 gold bars, each weighing one kilogram, were seized, along with 5 kilograms of gold jewelry.”

He added that investigations into Jumaili's case are ongoing.

The latest recovery comes as part of the large-scale anti-corruption campaign launched by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's government in late June, when security forces entered Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone and arrested scores of senior officials and lawmakers over alleged corruption and theft of public funds.

Authorities have also recovered 375 kilograms of gold in the corruption case involving Jumaili, according to the judiciary.

Earlier this month, the judiciary released photos showing 14 billion Iraqi dinars (about $10.7 million) recovered from underground drainage pipes allegedly linked to the case, bringing the total cash confiscated in the investigation to more than $130 million.

The arrests followed “confessions given” by Jumaili, who was arrested in May over an alleged embezzlement scheme.

The Iraqi government has officially confirmed that at least 21 people were detained during the sweeping anti-corruption campaign - dubbed Operation Dawn - on corruption charges. Iraqi state media had initially reported that 47 people were arrested.

Zaidi's anti-corruption campaign has drawn broad support from the Iraqi public, as well as from numerous politicians and officials across the country.
