ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Wednesday claimed responsibility for ballistic missile attacks targeting US bases in Jordan, with the US military saying that all the projectiles launched in what it termed "an attempted surprise attack" were intercepted.

“Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on US forces based in the Middle East,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement early Wednesday.

“US forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness,” the forces said while adding that all Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted.

The incident mark Iran's first direct attacks on regional countries since Washington completed its strikes on southern Iran on Friday.

The Jordanian military confirmed intercepting “five missiles coming from Iran” in a statement published early Wednesday, reaffirming its commitment to protect its country by “preserving its security and sovereignty,” noting that it will “not tolerate any threat to the security of the homeland and the safety of its citizens.”

Shortly after, the IRGC claimed responsibility for the missile attacks on Jordan.

“The brave warriors of the IRGC aerospace force targeted the US army air base and Central Command Center in Jordan with several ballistic missiles,” the Revolutionary Guard said in a statement.

“The threats of the US authorities and the illegal interventions against our interests must stop,” the IRGC added, warning of continued resistance and retaliation.

US military bases located in Jordan have repeatedly been targeted by Tehran during the current phase of the conflict, with three US service members having been killed following Iranian strikes on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Zarqa province.

The latested bombardment came as the United States and Saudi Arabia launched “precision strikes” targeting pro-Iran armed factions in several provinces in Iraq in the early hours of Wednesday, showcasing the degree to which the conflict has 

The attacks marked the first publicized Saudi involvement conducting kinetic operations against Iran-aligned Iraqi militias, coming after Riyadh accused the factions of launching attacks against the country for two consecutive days.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump said that there is a “good chance” a peace deal could be reached with Iran, claiming that “very friendly” talks are ongoing despite Tehran vehemently denying that any negotiations are taking place.

The US and Iran have exchanged daily strikes since Washington declared an end to the peace deal earlier in July, accusing Tehran of violating the ceasefire by targeting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The renewed hostilities kicked off only 21 days after the Iran-US MoU was inked.
