ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Iraq and the NATO Mission in Iraq (NMI) have agreed to open an office in Baghdad, Iraq's National Security Advisory said on Sunday, as the alliance continues its non-combat advisory mission in the country.

The agreement was reached during a video call between Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Aboudi and NMI chief Ramon Armada.

The two officials discussed “avenues for sustaining NATO’s support to the Iraqi Armed Forces, particularly in the fields of advisory assistance, training, and the exchange of expertise and information,” according to a statement from Aboudi's office.

“The two sides also agreed to proceed with the opening of the NATO Mission Office in Baghdad,” it added.

In March, NATO relocated all of its personnel to Europe because of the war between the United States and Iran.

Its personnel had been based at Camp Victory, a US military facility adjacent to Baghdad International Airport, which was repeatedly targeted by drone strikes after the conflict erupted in late February.

Saraya Awliya al-Dam, a pro-Iran Iraqi militia affiliated with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, claimed responsibility for attacks on the airport. The group has targeted US interests in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region since the war began.

During the call, the two sides also discussed “ways to reduce escalation and the need to reach solutions to the recurring crises in the region was emphasized through dialogue and diplomatic channels.”
