ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Renewed clashes erupted between Iranian Kurdish opposition groups and government forces early Sunday in western Iran's Kurdish regions (Rojhelat), with state media reporting at least one Iranian army personnel killed and another one injured.

Earlier on Sunday, the state-owned IRNA news agency said that a member of the Iranian army was killed and another was injured during “an armed clash with a group of armed thugs” in areas close to Rojhelat’s Marivan.

Fars news agency, an outlet affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), claimed that the clashes occurred between members of the army and the Iranian Kurdish opposition Free Life Party of Kurdistan (PJAK), which allegedly used two “suicide micro-drones” and fired RPG rockets.

The clash took place around 3 am Sunday in the border village of Sianav in Marivan, resulting in one Iranian army member being killed and another being “seriously injured,” the Oslo-based Hengaw Human Rights Organization said.

Hengaw said information it obtained indicated that PJAK was involved in the clash, adding that no casualties were reported on the group's side.

PJAK has not commented on or confirmed the claims yet.

Since early June, repeated clashes have erupted between opposition groups and the Islamic republic’s forces in Rojhelat, leading to casualties on both sides on several occasions.

The altercations have taken place in the cities of Marivan, Baneh, Mahabad, Piranshahr, and Paveh, among others.

The newly formed Rojhelat-based group Khori Hiwa (Sun of Hope) confirmed the Marivan clashes earlier Sunday, claiming one member of the government’s forces had been killed.

In late July, IRGC claimed that the US has not abandoned its alleged plan to overthrow the Islamic Republic through opposition groups, citing recent clashes with dissident groups on the borders. The opposition groups strongly denied the claims.

Iran routinely targets and clashes with Iranian-Kurdish opposition parties such as the PJAK, Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), Komala, and the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK), which are based in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Tehran designates the opposition groups as "terrorists" and has frequently carried out cross-border attacks against them. The groups, which seek greater rights for Iran’s marginalized Kurdish population, have fought an on-and-off conflict with the Islamic Republic for decades.
