ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that no negotiations with the US are taking place, stressing that Tehran sees “no possibility” of resuming talks until Washington ends its “violations” of a joint understanding and makes amends.

“We have no negotiations with the United States,” Araghchi told reporters following an Ashura ceremony in Tehran, stressing that “the exchange of messages through intermediaries continues. This is not called negotiation, it is an exchange of messages.”

“Until the US violations of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) are ended and the US does not make amends for what it has violated, in our opinion there is no possibility of resuming negotiations,” he added.

Tehran and Washington reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on June 17, but the deal fell apart only 21 days later after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Iranian forces had attacked a Cyprus-flagged ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

As a means in its war against the US and Israel, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway responsible for the transport of roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil, sharply driving up global oil prices.

Araghchi said that Iran’s conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz have been conveyed to the American side through intermediaries, adding that talks regarding a new passage route through the waterway with Oman are “in the final stages.”

In remarks conveyed by semi-official ISNA on Saturday, the minister stated that the conditions include “compensation for the violations of the Islamabad MoU by the US.”

Similarly, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi told reporters on Saturday that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is dependent on the US to “fully accept Iran's conditions and stop interfering in the regional negotiations.”

The free navigation of the waterway is one of Washington’s main demands and has been a key sticking point as Iran has maintained that it has the rights over managing the strait with its coastal neighbor Oman.
