ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – A high-level delegation from Turkey’s pro-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday, days after the Turkish parliament passed a historic bill outlining the legal framework of the ongoing peace process.

On Monday, the Turkish parliament voted to adopt a historic bill, titled the "Law Proposal on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration," which outlines the legal framework for the peace process with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), marking the largest legislative step ever taken by the Turkish state toward ending the conflict.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting at the presidential palace, DEM Party lawmaker Pervin Buldan said that certain points of interest and outstanding issues will be highlighted “in a written statement.”

Buldan, also a key interlocutor in the peace process, asserted that “the process should move forward quickly. We do not want the process to be infected by delays. We believe that such a thing should not be allowed. We believe that progress should be made. We hope to reach a conclusion as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, Mithat Sancar, another DEM Party MP, said that the party’s views regarding the implementation phase of the bill will be discussed, adding that “we will also share our ideas on how the other elements of the law of peace should form a roadmap.”

He further asserted that “the first step in advancing the process on an institutional and legal basis” is the establishment of legislative boards by a decision of the National Security Council, noting that this matter needs to be attended to “as soon as possible” and will be conveyed with the president.

He stressed the importance of engaging in talks with jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, saying, “After the meeting with the President, we need to have a meeting with Mr. Ocalan quickly.”

The lawmaker also highlighted the need to engage in talks with Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus regarding the establishment of a monitoring committee during this period.

The passage of the bill comes after nearly six months of limited progress regarding enacting the legal framework for the peace process that was initially signed in parliament earlier in the year, despite the PKK having agreed to dissolve itself and evacuate multiple of its military bases over that timeframe.

The PKK on Sunday criticized the bill, saying it “carries serious mistakes and inadequacies” in a statement carried by affiliated media.
