ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Two explosive-laden drones “launched from Iran” targeted the office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the Region’s security chief in Erbil province early Monday, Kurdish counterterrorism forces said. The attack caused no casualties.
“At 12:28 am on Monday, two Hadid 110 explosive-laden drones were launched from Iran toward the office of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region and the residence of the head of the security agency in Pirmam, Erbil province,” the Kurdistan Region’s counterterrorism forces said.
The attack caused no casualties, according to Kurdistan CT.
“We strongly condemn these attacks and any acts of aggression in the strongest terms. They are completely unacceptable under any circumstances, and we hold the perpetrators fully responsible,” the statement said, noting that the attack was carried out at 12:28 am local time.
The Kurdistan Region has come under constant attack – both from Iran and pro-Iran armed groups in Iraq – since the onset of the US-Israeli war on Iran, despite the Region’s leaders having repeatedly stressed neutrality in the conflict.
While Iran and Iran-backed armed groups claim the attacks target US interests in the Kurdistan Region, vital infrastructure has also been struck, including oil and gas facilities and residences of the Region’s leaders.
In late March, the residence of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok was struck by drones, resulting in no casualties.
President Masoud Barzani said in late March that his residence was targeted five times, adding that he "remained silent to avoid provoking public anxiety and anger."
Kurdish security forces have also been the subject of attacks. In late March, six Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers were killed and 30 others injured in an Iranian ballistic missile attack in Erbil’s Soran administration.
President Barzani condemned the attack as “hostile and utterly unjustified,” stressing the necessity for Kurdistan to be kept out of the regional war.
