The fire was sparked by a tanker on site, which caused an explosion at the fuel storage facility, according to The New Region’s correspondent on site.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – A large blaze erupted at a fuel storage facility in Sulaimani late Monday, with the health directorate reporting at least 20 injuries as civil defense teams worked to control the fire.

The fire was sparked by a tanker at the site, causing an explosion at the fuel storage facility, according to The New Region’s correspondent at the scene.

At least 20 people were injured in the blaze, according to Sulaimani’s health directorate.

“The injuries of all those wounded in the incident are minor and not life-threatening; some of them did not even need hospitalization and were treated at the scene of the incident by the health teams,” Head of Sulaimani’s health department, Sabah Hawrami, told The New Region.

The blaze occurred in Sulaimani’s Tanjaro area, an industrial zone and one of the province’s main fuel storage areas.

Fires are common in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, particularly during the summer and amid lax safety standards.

Earlier in August, a large fire broke out at a gasoline storage depot in Erbil province.
