ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – A suspected drone targeted the Soran administration in Erbil province late Wednesday, authorities said, with the blast sparking a fire in a mountainous area. 

Rawand Hawdiani, spokesperson for Soran’s civil defense, told The New Region that four teams were dispatched to the area following the explosion and they managed to bring the fire under control. 

“We suspect it may be a drone or missile strike,” he said, adding that a security investigation has been formed to probe the attack. 

The Kurdistan Region has been targeted by hundreds of drone and missile strikes since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran in February. Despite the warring parties having significantly wound down their attacks, the Region continues to be targeted. 

While the attacks - mostly carried out by Iran and Iran-backed Iraqi militias - have mostly targeted Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region, residences and offices of the Kurdistan Region’s leaders have also been struck. 

Earlier in August, the personal office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the Region’s security chief in Erbil province were struck by two Iranian explosive-laden drones. 

The attack caused no casualties and was widely condemned by Kurdish and Iraqi leaders, as well as the international community. 

Civilian infrastructure, energy facilities, and Kurdish Peshmerga forces have also been targeted throughout the conflict, despite the Kurdistan Region repeatedly asserting a neutral stance and saying it wants to stay out of the war.
