ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iraqi security forces apprehended the alleged perpetrator of a fatal shooting in Baghdad two days ago, Iraq’s Security Media Cell said Saturday, a day after the interior ministry announced the arrest of four suspects in connection with the incident.

Clashes erupted on Thursday in Baghdad’s Dora neighborhood between a group of armed men and a team of security forces tasked with removing illegal housing structures in the area, leaving two police officers killed and four others injured.

“The heroes of the Falcons Cell at the Federal Intelligence and Investigations Agency of the Ministry of Interior, after technical and field efforts, arrested the killer of the Brigadier General and the service member in the Dora incident,” Saad Maan, head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell, said in a statement.

The interior ministry said Friday that security forces had arrested four individuals linked to the incident and that several arrest warrants had been issued for other suspects.

Baghdad’s western Karkh district police chief, Brigadier General Hisham Mohammed Talaa, and another officer were among those killed, according to the ministry.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Thursday condemned the “heinous attacks on security and service institutions,” vowing to “pursue all those involved in this criminal act” and bring them to justice.

It is unclear whether the perpetrators belong to organized armed groups or are independent shooters. However, Dora is known to have high activity of armed groups, with separate shooting incidents having taken place in the past.

Many suburbs of the Iraqi capital feature widespread informal settlements built without proper planning permission, and the federal government has worked to regularize the status of these dwellings and improve services for residents.

The Iraqi parliament on Thursday recommended the formation of an investigative committee to examine the details of the incident, adding that the body would be obligated to provide the legislature with its final report, including “the results of the investigation, recommendations, and identification of those responsible.”
