ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region’s Sulaimani province came under three missile attacks by Iran in the early hours of Monday, with the attacks leaving only material damage and no casualties, an official told The New Region.

The strikes took place at around 3:00 am, as three consecutive blasts were heard across Sulaimani, Halabja, and the Sharazoor area.

“Three missiles struck the residential camp of the families of the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan [Shorshger] in the Zirgwezala area of Sulaimani province,” Ali Ranjbari, the party’s head of relations, told The New Region.

He said that the attacks caused material damage but did not lead to any casualties, lamenting that the targeted location was a “civilian site.”

Ranjbari blamed the Islamic Republic of Iran for the attacks, but Tehran has yet to claim responsibility.

Following the initial three blasts, residents in Halabja reported a louder bang that they said hit closer to home, with subsequent reports of a fire in Shnrwe Mountain, a site that has previously been targeted by Iranian projectiles.

The Kurdistan Region has repeatedly come under Iranian attacks following renewed hostilities between Tehran and Washington, with strikes focusing on US interests and bases of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.

A refugee camp belonging to the Iranian Kurdish opposition group Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan (Zahmatkeshan) was targeted by three drones in Sulaimani a week earlier, also causing no casualties.

In mid-July, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck a base belonging to Zahmatkeshan, wounding at least six members, according to the party.

The Kurdistan Region has long insisted upon its neutrality in the broader regional conflict and repeatedly condemned Iranian strikes.
