ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday expressed his appreciation to Xi Jinping after the Chinese leader called for a return to the US-Iran Islamabad MoU, saying that Tehran “shares this approach.”

China’s President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged Iran and the US to return to the 14-point agreement they signed in June that was meant to bring the conflict to a permanent end. Pakistan was the lead mediator between the two sides.

The Chinese leader’s remarks came during a three-day visit to Washington, where he met with US President Donald Trump, coinciding with the UN General Assembly’s 81st session in New York.

“I appreciate President Xi Jinping’s thoughtful and responsible support for a return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and for resolving differences through dialogue and diplomacy,” Pezeshkian said in an X post.

He added that Iran “shares this approach and underscores the importance of returning to that understanding, honoring the commitments already agreed upon,” as well as creating an environment conducive to serious, substantive, and results-oriented negotiations.

The Islamabad agreement was signed remotely on June 18 between Pezeshkian and Trump, setting a 60-day period for negotiations toward a final peace agreement away from the conflict that began in February.

The MoU broke down after 21 days, with both sides targeting each other’s interests in the region and trading accusations of violating its terms.

Pezeshkian has previously called for reviving the agreement. In early September, the Iranian president said his country is ready to return to the MoU, blaming Washington’s “excessive demands and breach of its commitments” for its collapse.
