ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Eight US soldiers were injured two weeks ago after their ship was targeted by an Iranian cruise missile in the Strait of Hormuz, US media reported Monday.

The Marines, who were operating as part of a landing battalion, were attacked on September 14, NBC News reported, citing three US officials.

The US-based outlet claimed that though the injuries were minor, they suffered smoke inhalation and possibly traumatic brain injuries, showing signs of concussions.

They were not on a Navy ship but the officials refused to comment on what kind of vessel it was. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) also did not report on the incident and rejected requests for a comment, NBC said.

On September 15, the British maritime agency UKMTO reported that a vessel was struck in the Strait of Hormuz “with an unknown projectile” a day earlier. It did not mention casualties.

Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil passes, as part of its war against the US and Israel, sharply driving up oil prices.

The US army, in turn, has imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports, and tried to undermine Iran’s blockade by coordinating with commercial vessels to bypass Tehran’s restrictions.

Earlier in July the Pentagon lowered the death toll of the Iran war from 18 to 14, removing four service members after it reclassified how their status.

According to the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS), 917 service members have been wounded in the war with Iran up until September 23.
