ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Tuesday said they carried out dozens of strikes against Saudi-backed forces “in the past few hours,” killing and wounding “more than 200.”
The strikes targeted the al-Jawf and Marib provinces, as well as the strategic Ras al-Ara and al-Saqiya near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, said spokesperson Yahya Saree.
“The Armed Forces confirm that more than 200 Saudi enemy reinforcements were killed or wounded in the past few hours as a result of dozens of strikes carried out by our forces,” he added.
“The losses among the Saudi enemy reinforcements are unprecedented in terms of personnel and equipment compared to all previous confrontations,” he added.
Saudi security matters took a turn for the worse in the past month after a Houthi military offensive in Yemen saw the Iran-backed group seize large swathes of the coast along the Bab el-Mandeb Strait from the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.
Operation Dawn of Yemen, a large-scale military offensive to retake the capital Sanaa and end Houthi control, was announced by Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi on Sunday, marking a major counteroffensive on the part of Riyadh and its allies.
Turkey and Pakistan on Monday announced that they will deploy military forces to Saudi Arabia to support their ally in Riyadh amid the ongoing military campaign against the Houthi rebels.
The announcement came after a high-level emergency meeting of Saudi, Turkish, and Pakistani military chiefs and foreign ministers in Riyadh.
Both Ankara and Islamabad had previously ruled out the notion of militarily intervening in the conflict, with Monday's announcement drastically bolstering the Saudi strategic equilibrium amid the ongoing offensive.
