ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - US President Donald Trump on Thursday declared that his country will not attack Iran ahead of the US midterm elections on November 3, adding that Washington is holding "productive discussions" with Tehran.
"I want to make it clear to everybody that, while Iran is in very bad condition, both Economically and Militarily, and while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, with Oil flowing in Record Numbers of Barrels through the Hormuz Strait (22 Million Barrels, last night alone, with not one barrel coming from, or going to, Iran!), we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd," the US president wrote on Truth Social.
His comments come as Iranian officials have confirmed that they have been engaged with American counterparts in a bid to reach an enduring solution to the on-and-off conflict that has persisted for most of 2026.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday that Tehran is reviewing the US response to Iran's "seven-day plan" peace proposal and will offer a response of their own "within the next few days," while foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei reiterated that Iranian "considerations and conditions for ending the imposed war on all fronts and restoring security to the Persian Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz have been clearly and firmly explained."
Trump has repeatedly referenced the upcoming midterm elections, in which his Republican Party is expected to grapple with voters' fatigue with the conflict, when commenting on hostilities with Iran. In early September, the US president said that he believes the war "is going to end immediately after the election" and that Tehran is seeking to influence US voters against him.
On September 29, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a lengthy letter addressed to the American people in which it called on voters to "wrest control back from corrupt politicians" and challenge Trump's "lying administration."
The president, who has repeatedly pledged an end to the war, on Tuesday said that he will finish up the conflict with Iran promptly, professing that he may either do so "the nice way or the not-so-nice way" and adding, "You'll find out soon."
