“They [Iran] have targeted us with two drones at the Azadi Camp, at 12:05 pm and 12:25 pm,” Amanj Zebaii, member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran’s (KDPI) leadership, told The New Region, adding that there was material damage but no casualties.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Two suspected Iranian drones struck a camp belonging to an Iranian Kurdish opposition group in Erbil’s Koya district on Monday, causing material damage and no casualties, an official from the group told The New Region.

“They [Iran] have targeted us with two drones at the Azadi Camp, at 12:05 pm and 12:25 pm,” Amanj Zebaii, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran’s (KDPI) leadership, told The New Region, adding that there was material damage but no casualties.

The Azadi camp reportedly houses KDPI members and their families. In March, Koya district mayor Tariq Haydari told The New Region that the camp had been evacuated due to repeated Iranian attacks, with its current situation remaining unclear.

The camp has been subjected to 166 attacks since the US-Israeli war on Iran broke out in February, according to the KDPI official.

The attacks come following the withdrawal of the US-led global coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) from Iraq. Besides fighting ISIS, the coalition also played a key role in intercepting drones and missiles during the US-Iran war.

According to Zebaii, the attacks are not linked to the coalition’s withdrawal and diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington, as attacks have continued regardless of regional developments.

“Even when the Islamic republic was in talks, it continued fighting us, when it had a ceasefire, it still targeted us. For the first time in 2017, they tested these drones and missiles on the KDPI,” he said.

“This is the Islamic Republic’s nature. It is not their first time, nor will it be the last.”

In late September, KDPI was targeted twice within the same week. In one of the attacks, three dron targeted Erbil’s Soran administration, injuring at least one person, with the projectiles landing in a residential area.

The Kurdistan Region has been targeted by hundreds of drone and missile strikes since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran in February. Despite the warring parties having significantly wound down their attacks, the Region continues to be targeted.
