ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – At least four missiles targeted a base of Iranian Kurdish opposition Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) in Erbil province on Wednesday, the group said, noting that the attack did not result in any casualties.
“Since 9:22, an Iranian missile attack has been underway on one of the bases of [PAK’s military wing] in the Harir-Balisan area,” the group said.
“So far, four ballistic missiles have been fired,” PAK said, noting that due to prior evacuation of the base, no casualties were incurred.
Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region have been targeted by hundreds of drone and missile strikes since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran in February. Despite the warring parties having significantly wound down their attacks, the Region continues to be targeted.
“The missile attack on the headquarters of our resilient forces had no achievements for Tehran, and we are all safe,” Goran Yazdanpanah, a senior PAK member, wrote on social platforms.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has repeatedly cited alleged cross-border offensives as the pretext for its attacks on the opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region.
The Iranian Kurdish opposition groups have collectively rejected the allegations.
On Saturday night, drones targeted a base belonging to the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan in Erbil province’s Soran administration, causing no casualties.
A missile strike targeting the same opposition group's base in Sulaimani's Zirgwezala area in the Tanjaro subdistrict killed at least 10 people in July, marking the deadliest attack on the Kurdistan Region since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran.
In mid-October, a camp belonging to another opposition group, the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in Erbil’s Koya district also came under attack by two drones.
The attacks come despite the withdrawal of the US-led global coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Besides fighting ISIS, the coalition played a key role in intercepting drones and missiles during the US-Iran war.
