ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq – Iran on Wednesday rejected Kuwaiti claims that an Iranian national and two Kuwaiti men awaiting execution were involved in plotting an assassination attempt targeting senior Kuwaiti officials, describing the allegations as “unfounded.”
On Monday, Kuwait’s anti-terror security criminal court sentenced three individuals to death over alleged collaboration with Iran and Hezbollah and plotting an alleged assassination attempt targeting senior officials, including the interior minister and first deputy prime minister.
The court also sentenced eight others linked to the case to an initial five years in prison.
The Iranian embassy in Kuwait “categorically rejects the claim put forward by the Kuwaiti government regarding the involvement of one of the Iranian citizens in a plot to assassinate figures or in any other act that would undermine Kuwaiti national security,” read a statement on Wednesday.
The Iranian national named by the Kuwaiti government has “not been present in Kuwait during the past ten years,” it said, noting that directing such “unfounded accusations” at Iran contradicts the principles of good neighborliness.
In mid-March, the Kuwaiti interior ministry arrested 14 citizens, with two Lebanese nationals among them, who were linked to what it described as the “terrorist organization Hezbollah,” noting that they were aiming to undermine the country’s “sovereignty and destabilize it.”
The security and sovereignty of Kuwait “is a red line that cannot be crossed,” the ministry said, stressing that no leniency will be shown to any party “proven to be involved” in such acts.
Since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war against Iran in February, Tehran has expanded its attacks on regional countries, targeting US-linked bases and diplomatic missions, citing the US presence in those countries, with Kuwait among them.
The latest attacks on Kuwait took place in early September in retaliation for Washington’s attack on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in southern Iran.
The developments come amid reports that the US and Israel are preparing for possible renewed strikes on Iran after the November 3 US midterm elections. The White House said Thursday that the US would not resume attacks before the vote.
