ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack that targeted a Shiite gathering near a mosque in Oman's capital, Muscat, according to a statement on the group's Telegram channel.

The statement said, "Three suicide bombers from the Islamic State attacked a Shiite gathering last night during their annual rituals" in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area of the capital, referring to the Ashura ceremonies.

Omani authorities reported that the shooting resulted in nine fatalities, including a police officer and the three perpetrators, identified as the attackers.

According to statements from Oman's Royal Police, military, and security agencies, they initially handled a shooting incident near a mosque in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area.

The incident was initially reported as four individuals killed and injuries to several others.

Security measures have been fully implemented, and investigative procedures are ongoing.

The Omani Royal Police expressed sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

They also announced the conclusion of operations following the shooting incident last night in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area of Muscat province. 

The incident left an additional five dead, including a police officer, and resulted in the death of the three assailants. 

Additionally, 28 individuals of various nationalities were injured, including four individuals who were injured while performing their national duty with the police and Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority. 

They were transported to healthcare facilities for treatment. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
