The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs refuted reports of 50,000 missing Pakistani citizens in Iraq, claiming it was a misunderstanding.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday refuted media reports alleging the disappearance of 50,000 Pakistani citizens in Iraq.

The ministry cited a misunderstanding in the transmission of information provided by Pakistani Minister of Religious Affairs Chaudhry Salik Hussain.

Hussain had reportedly stated on Thursday that 50,000 Pakistanis had gone missing in Iraq during visits in the month of Muharram.

He clarified that the Iraqi government issues free visas for pilgrims, but tour operators charge $80 to $90.

The Security Committee in the Iraqi Parliament had earlier noted the presence of organized crime networks led by Pakistani nationals in Baghdad and other provinces, but stated these networks do not pose a significant threat to Iraqi security.

Iraqi authorities and security agencies frequently announce the arrest and deportation of foreigners violating residency conditions.

Security analyst Mokhled Hazem, in an interview with The New Region, warned that the missing Pakistani visitors could become a "ticking time bomb" in Iraq.

He pointed out the difficulty in controlling borders during large pilgrimages, with many visitors entering Iraq illegally, aiming to settle or smuggle into Iran.

He emphasized that the numbers could increase during the upcoming Arbaeen pilgrimage.

On Thursday, Iraqi Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Ahmed Al-Asadi announced an investigation into the disappearance claims.

Meanwhile, Rusafa Police arrested six foreigners in Baghdad’s Al-Kariyat area, who had rented a house along the "visitor route" and were reportedly threatening residents.

Public concern mounted over Minister Hussain's claims about the disappearance of 50,000 Pakistanis, fearing security and economic impacts.

Although Hussain did not specify the timeframe, he mentioned their entry during religious visits. The Iraqi Ministry of Labor had warned earlier about the misuse of the Muharram season by illegal workers.
