ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - One person was killed and two Peshmerga fighters were wounded on Wednesday after a hand grenade exploded in a guest's hand at a base in the town of Telskuf, Nineveh province, a military official told The New Region.
A Peshmerga official said the incident happened when a guest named Difa’ Guli visited some of his Peshmerga friends at the Telskuf front, but a hand grenade exploded in his hands.
“The explosion killed him and wounded two of his friends, with one of them suffering critical wounds,” the Peshmerga source said.
Telskuf is a predominantly Christian town in northern Nineveh province.
Despite the territorial defeat of ISIS in Iraq, Peshmerga forces have stayed at their bases in the disputed territories between Erbil and Baghdad, making sure ISIS elements cannot make a comeback and securing the safety of the Kurdistan Region, as well as local residents of the areas where they have stationed.
Around 2,000 Peshmerga soldiers lost their lives and more than 10,000 were wounded in the three-year-long battle against ISIS.
When ISIS took over the Nineveh plains, Telskuf residents fled for their lives and sought shelter in the Kurdistan Region.
