At least 24 civilians, including children, have been killed in recent series of strikes in central and southern regions of war-ravaged Syria.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - At least 24 civilians, including children, have been killed in the latest series of “strikes” in central and southern Syria with “children paying the highest price” for the ongoing gruesome civil war in the country, Save the Children announced on Tuesday.

Save the Children has not detailed as to how many children are among the casualties or the timeline of the strikes. The New Region tried to reach out to them for the details, but they were not immediately available.

“Children are paying the highest price for the ongoing conflict in Syria with the latest series of strikes across southern and central Syria - in which at least 24 people including civilians were reportedly killed - again highlighting the risks to their lives, their futures and their families,” read a statement from Rasha Muhrez, Save the Children Response Director in Syria.

“Recent attacks across Syria have killed and injured children, destroyed vital civilian infrastructure like electricity and water stations, schools and hospitals. Whether it’s due to regional escalations, tensions across Syria’s northern border, or the ongoing conflict inside the country – children are suffering the most,” Muhrez’s statement read.

The organization warned that the humanitarian crisis in Syria is "at a record levels”.

"Over 16 million people – almost half of them children - need urgent assistance, the highest figure since Syria’s conflict began,” the director warned. "This violence is only worsening an already disastrous crisis."

The organization urged all parties in the war-torn country  "to prioritise the safety of civilians .”

Millions of Syrians have been displaced and many fallen victims amid crossfire between the conflicting parties since the outbreak of civil war in 2011.

Save the Children has repeatedly reported that the majority of Syrian children do not see a future in their home country, and one in three displaced children prefer to live abroad.
