ERBIL, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - German airline group Lufthansa announced Thursday it was extending a suspension of flights to Tel Aviv, Tehran and Beirut as regional tensions have soared after two days of deadly communication device explosions rocked Lebanon.
"Flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran will be cancelled until September 24," Lufthansa said. "Flights to Beirut will be suspended until October 26," it added.
The giant German aviation added "the safety our passengers and crews is always our top priority."
It added they would reassess the situation "in the coming days”.
Hundreds of communication devices including pagers on Tuesday and walkie-talkies on Wednesday used by members of Hezbollah exploded across Lebanon.
The Lebanese Health Ministry on Thursday put the total number of deaths at 37 and the injured at over 3,500, in attacks blamed on Israel.
The Lufthansa group has recently repeatedly suspended and modified its flight schedules due to growing tensions between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah mainly operating and based in southern Lebanon.
The renewed suspension of flights by the giant German aviation comes a day after Air France made a similar decision, suspending flights “from Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Beirut (Lebanon) and… Tel Aviv (Israel) until September 19, 2024 inclusive,” the French company announced.
Multiple other regional airlines have also suspended flights to the Middle East until further notice.
